SURTSEY ISLAND 3D, Iceland / Islande

Do you remember the second mission of Wings for Science ? We were in iceland to 3d-modelize the volcanic island of Surtsey, that went out of the water after a sub-marine eruption in the 70's. 

You will now watch the the first ever 3d model of this island !! 

The island is not as big now, as it suffered from a strong erosion...

C'était en Islande, où nous avions pour tâche de modéliser en 3 dimensions l'île volcanique de Surtsey, qui est apparues des eaux dans les années 70 à la suite d'une éruption sous marine. 

Vous allez voir le tout premier modèle 3d jamais réalisé sur cette île ! Depuis ce modèle, l'île a déjà réduit de taille, suite à une érosion très violente....

LUXEMBOURG 3D CITY

Wings for Science 1st mission started there... 

We flew over the city of Luxemburg to perform a 3d model out of city center, for the department of Geography of the University of Luxemburg.

Vol de démonstration au Salon du Bourget !

One of the in flight video of the demo flights celebrating the arrival of the round the world flight at Le Bourget Paris Air Show ! As you can guess, it was a big moment for Clem and Adrien, to celebrate the end of the world trip in front of the 300 000 visitors that were there this day !

France Inter / French radio

Bonjour à tous !

 

Pour ceux qui ont raté le direct de France Inter hier de 17 à 18h, vous pouvez le réécouter ici ! C'était la 1ère de "Le Temps d'un Bivouac" dirigé par Daniel Fiévet, avec qui nous avons passé un excellent moment. Jugez par vous-même !
Et juste avant d'aller à la Maison de la Radio, nous étions avec la charmante équipe de Gédéon Programme, qui nous a filmé nous "réadapter" à la vie occidentale et parisienne, avec notamment un passage remarqué chez le coiffeur pour Adrien.

Just before the emission we spent the afternoon with the team of Gedeon programme, a movie producer company, that filmed us while we were readapting to the citizen life, with a special motion for Adrien's haircut !

Wednesday at the Int. Paris Air Show! / Mercredi, au salon du Bourget!

Hello! Small summary of yesterday: we met the delegation of the United Arab Emirates, who invited us to the Abu Dhabi’s Air Show! We are very glad! And also another invitation to the Istanbul Air Show! It’s grate! We also made some interview for the written press, the radio... Between all of this, Adrien made a beautiful flying demonstration!!!
And today, it's the Luxembourg day! With the visit and the reception from the delegation of Luxembourg! But above all, we are waiting for you on our stand!

Hello! Petit résumé de la journée d'hier: nous avons rencontré la délégation des Emirats Arabes Unis, qui nous a invités à l'Air Show d'Abu Dhabi! Nous serons ravis de nous y rendre! Invitation également à l'Air Show d’Istanbul! Nous sommes flattés! Et interview presse écrite, radio,... Entre tout cela, le clou: la magnifique démo en vol d'Adrien!!!
Et aujourd'hui, c'est la journée du Luxembourg! Avec visite et réception de la délégation du Luxembourg! Et surtout, on vous attend sur notre stand!!!

Princely luxemburgish afternoon / Après-midi princière luxembourgeoise

The event of the day was the visit of the Heir Grand Duke and the Heir Grand Duchess! They congratulated us, tested our pilots sits, and took a look at the Zodiac Aerospace lifeboat, which equipped us in case of a crash during our trip ! They even mentionned that they were willing to see a documentary about our adventure  :)

L’événement de la journée fut la visite du Grand-Duc Héritier et de la Grande- Duchesse Héritière du Luxembourg ! Ils ont pu nous féliciter, tester nos fauteuils de pilote et jeter un coup d’œil au démonstrateur du canot de sauvetage Zodiac Aérospace qui nous équipait durant notre voyage ! Ils ont même souligné qu'ils avaient hâte de découvrir le documentaire sur l'aventure :)

Landing at the international Paris Air show! / Arrivée au Salon du Bourget!

That's it! We finished our one year tour aroud the world yesterday, at the international Paris Air Show! Follow us the all week on our facebook page --> news every morning and evening! But above all, come to visit our stand, next to the A320 Green Taxi, in front of the CNES (Rockets)! WE ARE WAITING FOR YOU!!!

Et voilà! Nous avons définitivement atterris hier après un an de tour du monde, au salon du Bourget ! Suivez-nous toute la semaine du Bourget sur notre page facebook --> news matins et soirs! Last greek mission and tomorrow France !

OK, time to rush now : We have to land on time the 17th !!
We make a long flight to go direct from Jordan to Greece, flying over Egypt and the Sinai. We land in front of Turkey, in an island called Samos.
We meet Theodoros and Anastasia, a couple of passionate marine scientists that founded the marine research center Archipelagos, to protect the marine biodiversity and more especially the seagrass, the whales and dolphins.
First, we go on their sailing boat to see their work from the ground ! then we fly over the boat to search for whales and to photograph seagrass.
Tomorrow it is already time to depart, to join France for the Paris Air Show !

Il faut se dépêcher, pour ne pas rater le Bourget le 17 !
Nous décollons directement de Jordanie pour aller en Grèce, en survolant l'Egypte et le Sinai. Nous atterrissons en face de la Turquie, sur l'ile grecque de Samos.
Nous sommes accueillis par Anastassia et Theodoros, un coupe de biologistes marins qui étudient et protègent la biodiversité marine, et surtout les herbes marine,s les dauphins et les baleines.
Tout d'abord, une journée en mer sur leur beau voilier, pour découvrir leurs métiers depuis le sol !

Puis nous nous envolons au dessus du bateau, afin de repérer les cachalots et de photographier les herbes marines.
Demain il sera déjà l'heure de repartir, pour rejoindre la France et le salon du Bourget !

NOUS AVONS HATE DE VOUS REVOIR ! Cherchez nous en face de la fusée du CNES :)

BIG NEWS : Paris Air Show (Salon du Bourget) invites us to open the show !

BIG NEWS : We are invited to open the Paris Air Show ! We should land on the 17th of June at 13h, i.e. just few minutes before the demonstration flights of the others aircrafts.
And then each day, i.e. from the 18th to the 23th, we will have a stand and will perform demonstration flights ! What a challenge !
And such a nice way to finish the roun-the-world-trip !!!! Come All to Celebrate with Us !

GRANDE NOUVELLE : Nous sommes invites à achever notre tour du monde par l'ouverture du Salon du Bourget !
On va atterir le 17juin vers 13h, puis on aura un stand et on fera un vol de demo chaque jour ! Venez nombreux nous soutenir !!!

3d model of Petra's Archeological site in Jordan

Starting our MISSION FOR ARCHEOLOGY, we overfly the incredible sites of PETRA, KERAK and DHARIHR. The data we collect, we use it to produce three dimensional models of the sites. In Petra, the goal si to create a 3D model of the city center. The picture below is a screen capture of a preliminary 3D model of on of the large temples in Petra...which one ? Anybody has an Idea ?

Nous voici à Petra ! l'objet est de produire un modèle 3D du centre ville, pour l'étude sur l'implantation des bains, ansi que du Siq, cette gorge rendue très célèbre par Indiana Jones, mais en peril à cause de l'érosion de ses sommets. Ci dessous, un modèle préliminaire que nous venons de produire de l'un des temples de Petra: lequel ? saurez vous nous en dire plus ??

Let's fly over the wadi rum and land there ! Nous volons au dessus du wadi rum et nous y posons !

Wadi means valley, but for now it looks more like a desert, very dry and very hot. The landscape is mountainous and with very contrasted colors. We are so happy to be in this wonderful environment ! 

There is many turbulences with the heat and the landscape, but still we managed to shoot nice movies (soon to see in the documentary !) and to even land there : Directly in the desert, over the sand ! It was easier due to the bigger wheels we got, especially modified for this type of occasions.
But after the landing, the temperature is so hot we had a small rest and went fast under the shadow.
It is a long time since we did not land over the sand ! We did it in Peru last October, and then in Australia few months ago, long time ago already :)

Le wadi signifie vallée, mais en pratique il s'agit, au moins pour l'instant, plutôt d'un désert. Trés chaud, très sec, avec des paysages montagneux tout en contraste. Nous sommes trés heureux d'être ici, et émerveillés par la beauté des lieux ! 

Le vol est assez turbulent avec la chaleur et les montagnes, mais nous avons tout de même été capables de faire de beaux films (bientôt montés pour le documentaire !) et de nous y poser.

En effet, nous y avons même localisé un endroit plane pour nous poser : Directement sur le sable, entre les rochers ! Cela n'a pas été un problème, grâce à nos grosses roues modifiées pour ce type d'occasion.
Mais la température est si chaude, que nous n'avons pas traîné et nous sommes vite mis à l'abris à l'ombre.
Cela faisait longtemps que nous ne nous étions plus posés sur le sable, nous l'avions fait au Pérou en octobre dernier, puis en Australie il y a quelques mois. Du temps est passé depuis ! :)

Welcome in Jordan !

Nous voici maintenant en Jordanie ! Après 8h30 de vol en direct à traverser du désert, nous posons enfin les roues.
La visibilité n'était pas fantastique, nous n'avons donc même pas pu profiter du paysage au long du vol.
A notre arrivée, nous sommes accueillis par l'école de pilotage de Ayla Aviation Academy, qui nous emmènent faire un vol en patrouille pour visiter les environs !

Here we are in Jordan ! After 8h30 hours of direct flight over the desert, we eventually land. The visibility was not so good, so we did not really enjoy the view. But at the landing, we were welcomed by the Ayla Aviation Academy and by all the instructors and students !
We answered all the questions, and even made a patrol flight to enjoy the area !

Saudi Arabia

Nous voici en Arabie Saoudite ! A Riyadh nous ne passons qu'une nuit, et ne sortons pas pour être bien en forme pour le long vol qui nous attend demain... Un nouveau pays, de nouvelles coutumes ! Clem porte l'abaya, la robe traditionnelle Saudi. 

Here we are in Saudi Arabia ! Clem wears the abaya, the traditional dress in Riyadh  We don't go out tonight, we want to be fully ready for the big flight of tomorrow...

We fly over these hand-made, artificial islands and this biggest tower on earth !

After United Arab Emirates, we continue our trip to Saudi Arabia ! On the way, we fly over the biggest tower in the world (burj khalifa) and over all the artificial islands made of sands, they seem like drawings made in a blank paper... some are geometrics while some are poetics, and some are just odds.
How human beings fashion the environment here is really fascinating !

Après les Emirats arabes unis, nous continuons notre route vers l'Arabie Saoudite ! Nous survolons la plus grande tour su Monde (burj khalifa) ainsi que toutes ces îles artificielles, créées à main d'homme à partir de sable, dans ce qui n'était à l'origine que de l'océan... Cela ressemble à des dessins crayonnés sur une feuille blanche, les formes y sont parfois géométriques, parfois poétiques, parfois simplement farfelues.
En tout cas, la manière dont l'être humain façonne son environnement est ici fascinante !

Hyenas and Arab Oryx in a protected refuge and artificial island !

We now head to Si Bani Yas, an island that was made to be a refuge for the wildlife, like the arabian oryx. 

We met Emy, who's in charge of the predator area : indeed, the arabian oryx was extinct in EAU but reintroduced so well that now there is too much ! Emy is then controlling the population by the hyenas, another endangered animal. 

When we met her, one of the hyenas just went out of its place, so she had to shoot it with an anesthesiant to make it sleep, and then to move it delicately back to its original place. At its wake up, the hyena was a bit lost : it did not see nor feel when Emy shot it, so it was like a curious dream to wake up somewhere else !

Nous allons maintenant sur Sir BaniYas, une île créée pour constituer un refuge pour la biodiversité en danger, telle que l'oryx d'Arabie. 

Nous y retrouvons Emy, qui travaille ici de l'introduction des prédateurs. En effet, les oryx étaient éteints dans les EAU, mais ont été si bien réintroduits sur Sir Bani Yas qu'ils sont maintenant trop nombreux ! Emy est donc chargée de contrôler la population d'oryx grâce aux hyènes, un animal qui était aussi en danger. Quand nous l'a rencontrons, une hyène vient de s'échapper de sa zone : Emy l'a donc endormie sans qu'elle s'en aperçoive, pour la déplacer délicatement dans cette boîte en bois. 

On a été un peu effrayé, mais au réveil la hyène était en bonne santé, juste toute étonnée de se retrouver dans sa zone :)

Gulf countries now ! At 1st, the United Arab Emirates

After Pakistan, we enter into the Gulf countries ! 

The 1st in the list : United Emirates. We fly over the desert for hours, then Oman (Muscat) and then land in Abu Dhabi just before sunset. On the finale, we can enjoy the view of the illuminated mosque, and at the landing, surprise : one man working in the airport heard Adrien's name, and decides to come... he is Marios, an old friend of Adrien, from Cranfield university !

We are spending the evening with him and his soon-to-be wife Luciana, and as you can guess, they have thousands of things to discuss 

In the same time, we also meet Marie and Martin, a very nice couple of 2 teachers working in the Lycée français Théodore Monot, and that are hosting us. So good ! Just at the arrival, we already have 4 friends more !

Après le Pakistan, nous mettons le cap vers les pays du Golfe ! 

Le 1er de la liste : Les Emirats Arabes Unis. Nous survolons le désert des heures durant, puis Oman (Muscat) et enfin nous nous posons à Abu Dhabi avant le coucher du soleil. En finale nous admirons la grande mosquée illuminée, et à l'atterrissage Adrien se trouve face-à-face à une vieille connaissance : c'est Mario, son ami de l'Université Cranfield ! Il travaille à l'aéroport d'Abu Dhabi, et a reconnu la voix d'Adrien à la radio !  Nous passons une super soirée avec lui et sa fiancée Luciana.

Dans le même temps, nous rencontrons aussi Marie et Martin, un super couple de profs du Lycée Français Théodore Monot, qui nous accueillent chez eux et ont organisé le lendemain une présentation devant leurs élèves de primaire et maternelle.

A peine arrivées, déjà 4 nouveaux amis ! Ca s'appelle de la chance !

Now Pakistan !

After India, it's time for PAKISTAN ! 

We are wonderfully welcomed in Karachi by the Pakistan Science Fundation : when we arrived, even though we had a lot of delay because of immigration issues (again), everything was planned for us ! The pakistani dress (Clem loves it), the planning for the days to come with many visits & meeting with eminent scientists, and even many meetings with young students (that welcomed us by throwing rose petals at us !) and a visit of the city !

The first thing we discovered in the city and really liked : the artistic sense of the people. Just look in the streets ! All the buses, the tuk-tuk are richly decorated with many colors and add-ons, each is unique !

Après l'Inde, bienvenu au Pakistan ! Nous sommes merveilleusement accueillis à Karachi pas la Pakistan Science Fundation, le grand centre scientifique du pays. Malgré nos heures de retard pour cause de problèmes avec les services d'immigration (de nouveau), tout est organisé à la perfection ! 

Un diner de réception, des rencontres avec d'éminents scientifiques, des visites dans des écoles (et accueil par des lancers de pétales de rose !) et dans la ville, et même une robe pakistanaise pour Clem (qui l'adore) 

La première chose que nous avons apprécié dans la ville à la sortie de l'aéroport : la créativité et le sens artistique des habitants. Regardez dans la rue ! Le moindre bus, le moindre tuk-tuk est richement décoré avec pleins de couleurs et d'ajouts, chacun est unique !

The plan are changing > we go to India !

Again, time to adapt our plans to the reality !

We wanted to go to Chittagong in Bangladesh to meet the NGO Friendship, but the french embassy contacted us to ask us expressly to NOT land here. Too bad....

We have to go direct to India in a 7 hours flight ! We spend the whole day in Calcutta for administrative issues, then go to Ahmedabad where the Physical Research Laboratory and 2 primary schools are all welcoming us ! 

In front of 250 children and then in front of 30 PHD students, we make a talk and answer questions. It was huge ! The scientists are passionate and the children very enthusiastic, this kind of day gives us a lot of energy !

Il nous appartient d'adapter nos plans à la réalité, une fois de plus ! Nous voulions aller au Bangladesh pour rencontrer l'ONG Friendship, mais l'ambassade de France nous a expressément contacté pour nous interdire de nous poser...

Nous partons donc directement pour l'INDE, pour un vol de 7h ! La journée à Calcutta est perdue entièrement dans des faux problèmes administratifs, puis nous arrivons à Ahmedabad où Le Physical Research Laboratory ainsi que 2 écoles primaires nous attendent pour présenter notre projet ! 250 jeunes élèves, puis 30 doctorants, la journée fut intense ! 

Les chercheurs sont passionnés, les élèves sont super enthousiastes, c'est une journée qui donne la pêche !
