Hurricane !! Ouragan !!

We planned to tell you about the whole trip to come where we are now, but there is a urgent news to share first : a hurricane is coming !! so we flew from farmers cay in bahamas to puerto rico, waiting for the hurricane to pass by while we are (we hope) safely parked in a hangar of the US air force. 

On comptait vous raconter tout notre voyage jusqu'ici, mais avant cela il y a une nouvelle toute récente à vous partager : un ouragan arrive !! nous nous sommes donc envolés depuis farmers cay (bahamas) jusqu'à puerto rico, où nous attendons dans un hangar des us air force que l'ouragan passe en toute sécurité (on l'espère)

At Orlando Airport, welcomed by friends / à Orlando, en Floride !

 And then, USA ! After a very long flight (5 hours), we headed directly to Orlando, Florida. We were welcomed by a couple of pilot friends, Rae and Tracy. As you guess, we were very impressed by their wonderful hangar ! :)

Nous voici partis pour les Etats-Unis ! Après un long vol (5h), nous sommes allés directement à Orlado, en Floride, où un couple d'amis pilotes rae et Tracy nous ont accueillis chez eux. Comme vous le voyez, ils ont un hangar très impressionnant ! :)

St Hyacinthe with the APBQ / Al'aéroport avec l'association des pilotes et aviateurs du Québec

Before our departure from Montreal, we spent few hours with the Association des Pilotes et Aviateurs du Quebec APBQ, who helped us a lot ! Thank to the whole team ! 

Avant de partir de Montréal, nous avons rejoint l'APBQ, Association des pilotes et aviateurs de montréal, qui nous a filé un bon coup de main ! encore merci à l'équipe !

Hockey in Montreal :)

Here we are, in Montréal ! We discovered our first hockey match with a friend, whose team actually almost won :)

Tigidou Lay-Lay !

Taking advantage of the data gathered together with INO, we performed an attempt for 3D terrain modelling out of geolocalised NIR (near infrared) Photography that we aquired.. Check out !

Pour l'INO, nous avons tenté de réaliser un modèle numérique de terrain à partir des images en proche infrarouge obtenues.. Regardez ca !

Quebec - infrared / infrarouge experience

We are landed in Quebec ! 


We met the scientists Paul-François, Benoit & Jean-François from the National Institute of Optics INO, with whom we are testing a Near Infrared Camera coupled with a panchromatic camera, to asses the health status of a forest. 

First, we make some tests on how to use the camera...

Nous avons rendez vous avec les chercheurs Paul-François, Benoit et Jean-François de l'institut national d'optique, avec qui nous allons tester une combinaison de caméra visible/proche infrarouge. 


Objectif : déterminer le taux de chlorophylle dans la canopé... 

En attendant les vols, nous nous familiarisons avec la camera.

Camping on our way to Quebec

The way from Halifax to Quebec.. we Camp around... in Roché Percé, then in L'ile aux Grues... this is a real fight against mosquitos for Clémentine.

De Halifax à Quebec, nous nous battons contre les moustiques qui attaquent notre tente (merci Ludo !) à la tombé du Jour..

Nous apprenons à poser la tente AVANT le coucher du soleil... We now know how important it is to settle BEFORE sunset to avoid the bites...

US visa !

US Visa ! After the Mingan Island mission, and after struggling with computer problems at the US consulate in Halifax, We now have our VISA for the Journey South ! 

But before that, we have been called by a research institute in Quebec.... we tell you more !

Après notre mission à Mingan, et après avoir lutter contre les problèmes administratifs de l'ambassade américaine, nous avons enfin nos visas US pour poursuivre la route vers le sud !!... mais avant cela, nous avons été contactés par un institut de recherche du coté de Quebec...

Today, we met Seals, sunbathing during our flight ! On a rencontré des petits phoques aujourd'hui, durant notre vol !

And the answer of the previous question is : Some fast Gannets ! They are the largest seabirds in the North Atlantic, with a wingspan of up to 2 metres. Gannets hunt fish by diving from a height into the sea and pursuing their prey underwater. They can dive from a height of 30 m, achieving speeds of 100 km/h as they strike the water ! (Thanks wikipedia)

Et la réponse à la question précédente est : Des fous de Bassans ! Ce sont des oiseaux de mer qui se nourrissent de petits poissons et de céphalopodes, en plongeant à plus de 30 mères de profondeur, en atteignant une vitesse de 100 km/h ! ils vivent uniquement dans l'Atlantique Nord, ce sont les plus gros des oiseaux de mer d'Europe (merci Wikpedia)

Whale in Mingan ! Une baleine à Mingan !

Ooops ! There was something floating, just there ! We are in Mingan Island Now ! Helping out our friends form the Mingan Island Cetacean Study... and this is our first Humpback Whale... just diving !

Nous voici au terme de notre traversée de l'atlantique ! Enfin arrivés à Mingan, avec ci dessous... notre première baleine à bosse, spottée à pointe nord Anticostie !

Kuujjuaq - Canada !

Math of the Day: given the following arch iceberg ( 8m radius !!!! ), we worked out a rough 3D model thanks to photogrammetry. From this model, we know that the aerial volume of the arch iceberg is 22 500m^2: what is the mass of the total Iceberg, including its underwater base ?

At first one of the pictures, and at second the 3d model out of the pictures.

Qui saura nous calculer la masse de ce "petit" monstre ? Le volume emergé de cette arche glacée a été calculé à 22 500 m^2, grâce à notre technique de photogramétrie et de modélisation 3d, mais il reste à déduire la masse totale...

Happily landed in Greenland / Posés au Groenland, heureux !

Kulusuk airport - Greenland / L'arrivée à Kulusuk, au Groenland

And after a 4hours flight across Atlantic, we finally see the runway of Kulusuk in Greeland, between the glaciers ! 

Et après 4heures de vol au dessus de l'Atlantique, nous voyons enfin la piste de Kulusuk au Groenland, entre les glaciers !

Meeting with Ingvar, the geologist and biologist

Here we are, In Westman Islands ! It has been a long flight down there, and crossing the Highland !! 

Here we find Ingvar, the geologist and biologist we are here to give a hand to.

To give him a Hand, the first problem we faced was Adrien's Vertigo....

Nous voici dans les Iles Westman, après un long vol pour y parvenir et une traversée des Hauts Plateaux ! Nous étions aujourd'hui avec Ingvar, le géologue et biologiste, pour lui apporter un coup de main.. Mais pour cela, Adrien devait affronter son vertige ! 

Indeed: Ingvar's working place is A nice little house, up on the cliffs of Ystiklettur, North East of Heimaey Island. Well ... you better not look down....

En effet, Ingvar travaille dans cette jolie petite maison, en haut des falaises de Ystiklettur, au nord-est de l'île de Heimaey ! Il vaut mieux de pas regarder vers le bas....

En route to Westman Islands

Enroute to Westman Island, across the Icelandic High Lands ! En route vers les îles Westman, il nous faut traverser les splendides hauts plateaux islandais !

Egisstaldir to Mytvan / Vers Mytvan

Here we were, in Mytvan. 

After an amazing flight above the glacier, we took a bath in a blue lagoon : a special icelandic heated-lake called Jarðböðin...

Iceland is amazing !

Nous étions hier à Mytvan. 

Après un vol fabuleux au dessus des glaciers, nous avons pris un bain dans un lac chauffé par géothermie nommé Jarðböðin... 

L'Islande est magique ! 

Arrival in Iceland

After 4h30 flying, and about 480 Nautical Miles, we are landed in Iceland !!! Nous voici en Islande, à Egilsstadir pour être précis ! Snowy pics on Arrival: here we are, up north ! It is now midnight and the sun is still up high . Difficile de se reposer avec ce soleil qui ne se couche jamais.

Sealand

On our way, we crossed the Principality of Sealand, a small autonomous state est to Great Britain. It's the first time in our life we 3d-model an entire country in a single flight ! :)

Many thanks to his Higness Prince Michael of Sealand for granting us the overflight permit !


Sur le chemin, nous avons croisé la principauté de Sealand, un petit Etat autonome à l'est de l'Angleterre. C'est la 1ère fois de notre aventure que nous modélisons en 3d un pays tout entier ! :)

Merci au Prince Michael de Sealand de nous avoir accordé l'autorisation de survol !

Go go go !

And now, time to go ! We will go directly to scotland in 6 hours flight, to catch up our delay. 6hours will be our maximum duration of flight, so we will take the opportunity to try our fuel system and our survival wear. 

Ca y est, on y va ! On part directement en Ecosse, pour rattraper notre retard. 6h dans les airs sera notre temps maximal de vol, on va donc en profiter pour tester notre système de réservoirs et nos tenus de survie.

Lesson of Patience

Le décollage depuis le Touquet est reporté : trop de vent et de la pluie... on apprend à être patient :) 

En attendant on se repose et se ballade en vélo, en prévision du survol maritime en direction de l'Angleterre.



The flight is postponed, because of the wind and the soon-to-come rain... we learn the patience at Le touquet :)


For today we rest and cycle, waiting for the next sea-flight direct to England.
